A 911 Hang-Up at Buffalo Airport Reports an Alleged Murder and Kidnapping — and Then Goes to Voicemail

Officers were sent across the Buffalo airport terminal early this morning on a 911 hang-up in which a woman said she wanted to report a murder and a kidnapping before the line dropped, with only a phone's GPS to chase her.

At 6:50 AM, a Cheektowaga dispatcher sent a unit to check unknown trouble at the Ciminelli building at Buffalo airport, 4630 Genesee Street. The call, the dispatcher relayed, “started with a 911 hang-up, went right back to voicemail”.

Buffalo had reached the Cheektowaga desk after the caller — a female — said before the transfer that she wanted to report allegedly a murder and a kidnapping, and that she needed officers there. With the voice line gone, the only lead was the phone itself.

On rapid SOS, the dispatcher said she could see the call and that the person appeared to be walking down toward Airborne, tracking the phone's GPS. Units answered with a long string of acknowledgments; the scanner traffic did not establish whether the caller was located or what, if anything, had actually happened.

A Man Is Shot in the Ribs on West Chippewa, Where Gunfire in the Bar District Is Genuinely Rare

Overnight, Buffalo police confirmed a shooting on West Chippewa Street — a bar-and-nightlife strip where gunfire is unusual — with one man hit in the ribs and a bullet hole punched through a front window.

At about 2:49 AM, a Buffalo Police dispatcher confirmed a shooting near 75 West Chippewa, with an individual shot. Asked where the man had been hit, the response was plain: “He was shot on the ribs”.

Units broadcast a possible plate for a vehicle tied to the shooting and tracked it westbound along West Shore. Officers at the scene reported finding a bullet hole through a front window and a second round lodged in the glass.

A short time later, officers who said they had stopped that same car earlier in the night gave the operator's name as Juan Gutierrez Vega, with an address of 475 Riley Street, and headed over to check it. The scanner traffic did not establish the victim's condition before the end of the window.

Officers asked whether he had a history of criminal possession of a weapon; the complainant said she was not aware of him having any firearms. Units called for a perimeter and staged near the Sleep Inn and Speedway, with NFTA sending a couple of cars to assist.

Officers coordinated to cover the east and west entrances before moving. The scanner traffic did not establish whether the man was taken into custody before the thread closed.

The pair was reported to have left slowly eastbound on Walden in a Toyota Highlander, later described as a black 2019 model with a possible plate. Officers fanned out across the parking lots and nearby lights, checking vehicles but reporting negative results. The scanner traffic did not establish whether the suspect was located.

The complainant had no access to a vehicle and stayed on the line with dispatch as units rolled. Within a couple of minutes, dispatch relayed that the daughter had set the phone down but it sounded like she had found her mother at the corner of Autumn Meadow and Snowberry.

Editor’s Note

An ordinary overnight of falls, fender-benders and fire alarms rolled across Western New York for most of this window — lift assists at care facilities, deer struck on the Thruway, and a long run of commercial alarm activations that came to nothing. The harder edge arrived late: a cluster of armed confrontations through Buffalo and Cheektowaga, a 2:49 AM shooting on West Chippewa, a reported ten-person armed brawl on Genesee Street, and a wanted-man foot pursuit that ringed a hotel near the airport with a perimeter. In the Southtowns and GLOW counties, a pair of rural structure fires each pulled in mutual aid from three departments. And in Amherst, a home-zone scramble found an 85-year-old woman with dementia safe at a corner minutes after she walked out her own front door.
