A Border Patrol Chase Scatters Suspects Across Amherst, Sending Officers Combing Carmen Road and Sweet Home for Men on Foot

A pursuit that began at the Sheridan Drive Walmart last night fanned out across the neighborhood, with Amherst officers tracking men in sweatpants and hoodies while Border Patrol gave them little to go on.

Yesterday at about 8:06 PM, Amherst police picked up a foot chase that had spilled out of the Walmart at 3290 Sheridan Drive and spread into the surrounding streets, with Border Patrol agents and multiple subjects on the move. A dispatcher relayed early on that the subjects had gone off the phone and that Walmart loss prevention “have no updates or they have no idea what's going on”, leaving officers to check the area on their own — one noting he saw no Border Patrol in the lot at all.

The traffic placed one subject in the roadway on Carmen Road, north of Sheridan, near 427 Carmen, with a second man heading eastbound and a third described as wearing three pairs of sweatpants and a navy hoodie; others were given as a denim jacket and shorts and a dark striped hoodie. Officers reported one man out and worked to confirm names as the search widened. Border Patrol told dispatch one of their agents was on Carmen while other agents filled a nearby lot, and that “one party went towards Sweet Home”. According to the radio traffic, one Amherst officer said an agent drove right past him on Carmen when he tried to flag the man down. The scanner did not broadcast charges or how many were ultimately detained before the thread closed.

Yesterday at about 8:10 PM, Hamburg police dispatched units to a domestic at 4812 East Highland Parkway, described on the air as a verbal argument between a husband and wife. The dispatcher relayed that the wife reported her husband was trying to leave with the couple’s children, ages 6 and 2.

The traffic indicated the man “does have a shotgun” in the home, though it did not place a weapon in his hands. A second domestic dispatch followed moments later to another Hamburg address, also a verbal argument, keeping units busy across the town. The scanner did not broadcast how the East Highland Parkway call resolved, whether the children left with either parent, or any arrest before the thread moved on.

A UB Officer’s Attempted Traffic Stop Ends With a Car in the Grass at the Flint Ramp and Three Occupants Detained

Yesterday at about 9:43 PM, a University at Buffalo campus police officer reported that a vehicle he had tried to stop took off and then crashed at Millersport Highway at the Flint ramp. The officer radioed “he took off on me, he crashed, he's on Millersport at the Flint Ramp, start a rig, send me more units” and called for a rig and additional units, describing the car on its side in the grass with unknown occupants.

Crews found three people in the car, and an officer told radio they would “probably need fire to get the driver out”. By about 9:48 PM, the officer reported everyone was out of the vehicle and detained, and that they did not appear to need medical attention. The scanner did not broadcast why the driver fled or any charges before the thread closed.

A Single Call of a Man in Fatigues Carrying a ‘Machine Gun’ Along Route 60 Sends Deputies Searching — and Finding Nothing

A lone third-party report yesterday afternoon described a man walking a rural stretch of Route 60 with a weapon on his shoulder; a careful patrol sweep turned up no one.

Yesterday at about 3:12 PM, Chautauqua County sheriff’s dispatch asked units to check Route 60 somewhere north of Cassadaga for a “male subject walking northbound, wearing fatigues and allegedly with a machine gun on his shoulder”. The dispatcher was careful to note the limits of what they had, stressing that it was a single third-party call.

Deputies worked the area and, by about 3:23 PM, reported negative results and cleared the call. The scanner never confirmed whether the man or any weapon existed, and the traffic offered nothing to establish either. Patrols turned back to routine business — an aggravated-harassment complaint at a nearby mobile-home park among them — as the search wound down.

Editor’s Note

An overnight bracketed by two emergencies gave the window its spine: a Depew man barricaded himself inside 149 Cornell Drive with a butcher knife, drew a SWAT notification and evacuated neighbors before the standoff ended in an arrest and a stove-top fire, and hours later a guttering two-and-a-half-story fire chewed through a storefront-and-apartments building at 897 Tonawanda Street in Buffalo. Around those were the region’s ordinary beats — domestic calls, elderly falls and difficulty-breathing runs from Grand Island to Olean, and a long string of Thruway fender-benders and deer strikes. The night’s texture came from classic Western New York oddities: three deer shot with arrows and gutted behind a Lancaster home, and a Cheektowaga welfare check that turned up a party crowd dressed head-to-toe as cows. No threads from yesterday’s prior edition required updating.
