A 3 A.M. Hostage Call Routed Through New York City's 311 Line Sends Police to a Dark House on Heath — and Finds Nothing

A caller claimed two hostages and a weapon; by daylight it had every mark of a swatting hoax, with Tonawanda police checking a second address of the same name across town.

Early this morning at about 3:39 AM, Buffalo police began working a reported hostage situation on Heath after a report relayed through New York City's 311 line. According to the radio traffic, a male caller claimed “he had two hostages and a dangerous weapon”, with dispatch noting there was “no callback number since it ended through the 311 line” because the call had come in through the 311 line — a wrinkle flagged on the air as a “possible swatting call”.

Officers found the residence dark, with only a single basement light on, and pulled the call history: the last contact at the address had been a welfare check in July 2026 with no answer and no complaint. Units made contact on Heath and went in to clear the house, finding two people outside, no weapons, and no emergency. Dispatch later identified a 173 Heath Terrace in the Town of Tonawanda, off Stern near Kenmore Avenue, and Tonawanda police sent a couple of units to check that address as well — reporting no call history there either.

A Group of Ten Breaks the Windows at a Hayward Avenue Home, Forces Their Way In, and a Woman Is Assaulted as Children Are Shoved Aside

Buffalo police pulled multiple cars to the upper flat after nearly an hour's worth of calls describing the mob breaking in.

Yesterday at about 10:46 PM, Buffalo police rushed cars to the upper flat at 45 Hayward after a report that a group of about ten people was breaking windows and forcing their way into the home. According to the radio traffic, the call had been pending for nearly an hour before units were freed up, with dispatch noting the crowd “breaking windows getting into the house” and that “A female was assaulted and says children were pushed”.

Dispatch broadcast that a female at the home had been assaulted and that children were pushed during the break-in. Within minutes of officers arriving, the primary unit asked to downgrade the call to an accident with no injury — the kind of abrupt reclassification that often follows once officers get a firsthand read on a chaotic scene. The scanner did not broadcast arrests or the woman's condition before the thread went quiet.

A Man in Fatigues Carrying a Long Gun at Cleveland and Beach Sends Cheektowaga Cars Combing the Side Streets

A single complaint from a pharmacy parking lot put officers onto a man described as walking with a rifle; he was later identified as a local business employee.

Yesterday at about 6:53 PM, Cheektowaga police pushed cars north toward Cleveland and Beach after a report of a man in fatigues “supposedly carrying a rifle”. According to the radio traffic, the lone complaint — phoned in from a pharmacy at the corner, with a 2024 blue-gray Lincoln in the lot — described a white male about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7, roughly 150 pounds, with what the caller thought was “a .22” rather than a shotgun.

Officers held the air for a senior car and worked the area, pressing westbound on Cleveland toward Arlen and up the side streets as far as Cresthaven and Oman without finding the man. A unit was sent to the pharmacy to speak directly with the complainant. The subject was later identified on dispatch as a man named Matthew Church, described as an employee at a nearby business; no weapon was recovered and no threatening actions were reported.

RESOLVED

Gunfire Reported at a Marsh Road Barn Fire Brings the Wyoming County Sheriff Out Alongside the Tankers

Fire crews fighting a working barn blaze got an added complication — a report of shots fired that pulled sheriff's deputies to the same address.

Yesterday afternoon, a working barn fire at 10986 Marsh Road in Wyoming County drew a heavy mutual-aid response of tankers, and the radio traffic carried an unusual twist: at about 3:04 PM, dispatch sent “Fire Department tankers requested to scene 10986 Marsh Road for the gunfire”. Deputies from the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office responded alongside the fire crews.

Units from Perry and surrounding companies worked the fire through the afternoon, with a squad requested back to the scene more than an hour later, around 4:15 PM. The scanner did not broadcast the source of the gunfire or any injuries before the thread went quiet.

State Police Hunt a Brand-New Blue Lamborghini Fleeing Westbound From Dunkirk, Guided Only by a Caller Without a Working Phone

Troopers combed the Silver Creek ramps for a 2026 model that may have slipped off near Exit 59 — with no plate and only a vague direction to go on.

Yesterday at about 9:41 PM, State Police and Thruway units were chasing a thin lead on a stolen vehicle in the area of Exit 59 near Silver Creek. According to the radio traffic, a caller said the car — “a blue Lamborghini”, said to be a brand-new 2026 model — was last placed in the Silver Creek area, but she “couldn't get a better location for him because he doesn't have a working cell phone”.

A trooper headed westbound from Dunkirk and turned at the Silver Creek ramp, reporting nothing on either side and no clear direction of travel; the vehicle was believed to have come eastbound from the Erie state line and may have exited somewhere around Exit 59. Dispatch tried calling the woman back to pin down a better location. The scanner did not broadcast a recovery before the thread went quiet.

A Woman Is Struck by a Car on West Chippewa and the Driver Flees Up Huron — Lost Even to the City Cameras

Officers chased descriptions of a black SUV, then a black Cadillac, that vanished eastbound after the hit-and-run.

Overnight at about 1:30 AM, Buffalo police rushed cars to West Chippewa and Franklin after a report that someone had been hit by a car. According to the radio traffic, a female was struck and the vehicle “took off”, with an officer reporting it “went eastbound on Huron until I lost it” near Huron and Pearl.

Descriptions shifted as the scene developed — first a black SUV, then a possible black Cadillac — all headed eastbound on Huron with no plate information, and officers could not raise the city camera room to track it live. Fire and AMR were notified and responded to the woman. The scanner did not broadcast her condition or an arrest before the thread went quiet.

The Woman on the Tracks Was Just Yielding to a Deer

Yesterday evening, a caller watched a woman stand on the train tracks near the police station for a worrying half hour, and Depew officers went out to check on her. The resolution, delivered over the air, was pure Western New York: a woman named Linda, who declined to identify herself, explained she “walks on the grass next to the tracks for exercise”, and that a deer had wandered close by — so she simply stood still and waited for it to pass.

Editor’s Note

Overnight across Western New York was defined by fire and misdirection: two multi-alarm Northtowns fires — a working barn fire on Hiller Road in Newstead and a garage-and-barn blaze on Wood Acres Drive in Amherst — drew mutual aid from a half-dozen companies, while a 3:40 AM 311 call relayed from New York City sent Buffalo and Tonawanda police chasing a phantom hostage situation on Heath that proved to be an apparent swatting hoax. Scattered violence punctuated Buffalo's East and West sides, a group of ten reportedly stormed a Hayward Avenue home, and State Police spent the evening hunting a stolen 2026 Lamborghini fleeing westbound from Dunkirk. Beneath the headlines ran the region's steady undercurrent — elderly falls, difficulty-breathing runs, hit-and-runs and alarm activations from Amherst to Olean. No threads from yesterday's prior edition required updating.
