The Gentle Tail: Buffalo Officer Shadows a Suspect Who Keeps 'Cruising Around Softly'

Not every chase is a chase. At about 11:11 AM, a Buffalo officer keyed up car-to-car to report he'd been spotted but hadn't tipped his hand: “he saw me, but I didn't spook him, so he's still just cruising around softly”. His plan, he explained, was patience over drama — wait for the driver to stop at a red light and “potentially box him in”. No sirens, no theatrics — just a slow-motion cat and a mouse who has no idea the game is on.

Good Afternoon, Mr. Blockhead: An Officer's Deadpan Greeting for a Familiar Face

Some radio courtesy comes with an edge. Just after 11:21 AM, a Buffalo officer opened a transmission with a greeting delivered flat as a countertop — “Good afternoon, Mr. Blockhead” — a salutation that suggests the subject on the other end is neither a stranger nor a favorite. Politeness and exasperation, keyed up in a single breath.

It Was a Pleasure: A Firefighter's Old-School Sign-Off From a Wrapped Scene

Work done, hose picked up, and a little grace on the way out the door. At about 12:42 PM, a Buffalo fireground crew keyed up to release the other companies with a courtliness the trade doesn't always show: “we're all wrapped up over here with 32, pick up their hose lines. It was a pleasure. You guys can pick up”. Command then held the scene with a handful of units and cut everyone else loose — the radio equivalent of tipping your hat.

You can turn off the truck. You cannot, apparently, turn off the truck. Around 1:23 PM, Engine 35 reported a siren that simply would not stop — dispatch asked if it was stuck on, and the crew's answer said it all: “Rig is completely off and it's still going off”. A troubleshooter walked them through the classic fix — “Did you try on the front bumper to shut the power off to the siren?” — but the crew had already tried that, multiple times. Help was dispatched to Elk and Dole Streets, presumably to a crew you could hear coming from a mile off.

At about 1:40 PM, after juggling channel checks, EMS runs and fire inspectors out “doing fire inspector things at the moment”, an Amherst fire dispatcher offered a crew the kind of aside that speaks for the whole board: “we've got about 4 or 5 calls going on right now, just so you know”. Editor’s Note

A steady weekday across Western New York — the usual churn of elderly EMS runs, alarm activations and fender-bender crashes from Buffalo to the outer counties — carried a handful of calls that broke through the routine. Late morning in South Buffalo an infant was found unresponsive on St. Mary's Street with CPR in progress, and blocks away a multi-vehicle fire tore through a South Buffalo auto shop on Elk Street, drawing a deck gun and a tower ladder. On Buffalo's east side a driver rammed a police unit and fled north on Eggert Road, while in Niagara County a semi-truck struck a pole and rolled over in Gasport, opening a large hydraulic-fluid leak. Crisis calls threaded through the morning: a pregnant, suicidal woman screaming during a Town of Tonawanda domestic, and a Veterans Crisis Line call in Cattaraugus County over a woman threatening self-harm at a home with several registered pistols.
