Man Found at the Bottom of a 20-Foot Embankment With His Lawnmower on Top of Him

A Beals Fall call for a man who fell and couldn't get up escalated to a Mercy Flight rescue when crews found him down an embankment under his mower for an unknown length of time.

Yesterday at 4:07 PM, Cattaraugus Fire dispatch sent Gowanda EMS to a priority call at 62 North Water Street, in the Beals Fall area, for a 52-year-old man reported to have “fell down, unable to get up, possible injury”. What sounded routine turned serious within a minute.

At 4:08 PM a responding unit advised the call would be upgraded to ALS and asked to put Mercy Flight on air standby. Pressed on the injuries, the unit reported “a male rolled down a 20-foot embankment, he had a lawnmower on top of him” — and that he had been down there an unknown amount of time. He was reported still conscious.

Crews scrambled additional manpower and a landing-zone team, and by 4:13 PM the dispatcher confirmed “I have Mercy Flight 6 en route, will be in the air, 23 minute ETA to the scene”. As the exact spot was pinned down between calls on Route 98 and Freedom, a chief settled the landing zone at the Arcade fire hall. No word on the man's condition crossed the air before the call moved off the channel.

The Shuttle Yard's Morning Briefing: One Fired Driver, One Bad Aim

Between pickups, two shuttle drivers swapped the whole neighborhood ledger.

Before 6:00 AM, two airport shuttle drivers used a quiet stretch of the radio to catch up on the news up the road — a former colleague who “got in a fight here with another driver” and got fired, and then, matter-of-factly, yesterday's excitement: “remember I told you someone got shot in the leg up the road yesterday”

The retelling only got more vivid from there — the driver reported that the round “went through the top of his eye and came out the back of his bottom thigh” — before the other driver, unmoved, noted only that she hadn't seen it on the news. The cops and ambulances, she allowed, had at least been on her map.

Editor’s Note

A steady overnight leaned hard on the Southern Tier, where Chautauqua and Cattaraugus dispatchers ran a near-constant board of medical runs, domestics and welfare checks into the early-morning hours. The window's sharpest moment came yesterday afternoon in Cattaraugus County, where a man rolled twenty feet down an embankment with his lawnmower on top of him and lay there an unknown time before crews and Mercy Flight were summoned. Closer to home, Amherst police answered a teenager reported throwing things and threatening to kill everyone in a Mill Street house, a Tonawanda man said a knife-wielding cyclist chased him through the neighborhood, and a Salamanca traffic stop turned into a fled motorcycle and a bag of recovered mail. Buffalo's fire and EMS channels stayed busy but routine.
