Boat Fully Engulfed Near Grand Island Bridge, Three Aboard

At 12:39 PM, Grand Island Fire Dispatch relayed a Coast Guard report of a boat fully engulfed in flames near Grass Island, with three people aboard. Dispatchers first sent Rescue 2 toward Beaver Island before refining the location to the area east of the North Grand Island Bridge along East River, reachable via Warner Drive. The Erie County Sheriff's Office reported that two people had come off the boat, with a male occupant possibly still aboard and his status unclear. The call drew a multi-agency response — City of Tonawanda, River Road units, the U.S. Coast Guard and Niagara County resources — along with a Grand Island fireboat launched on a dedicated marine channel. Rescue 2 reached Beaver Island and cleared the scene by 12:47 PM, though dispatch traffic reflected some early confusion in pinning down the vessel's exact position on the water.

Kings Highway Standoff: Officers Warned of Seized Guns, a Bulletproof Vest, and a Man Who Fought Patrols Before

Dispatch read the subject's history to responding units as the scene developed.

Beginning around 1:28 PM, Amherst police worked a developing incident at 158 Kings Highway involving a man identified on dispatch as Michael Santamaria. The call began minutes earlier as a report of a male throwing sticks at a female nearby; the subject was described as no longer on scene when it escalated to a named welfare situation at the address.

Dispatch broadcast the subject's history to responding units: when he was previously taken on 941 papers, he screamed at patrols, ran into his house, had to be physically restrained, and fought with officers. Several weapons were seized at that time — shotguns, long rifles, and ammunition — and he was described as wearing a bulletproof vest. As units held the scene, one asked to stage a PCA nearby.

Suicidal Woman Found Walking Pock Hill Road After Leaving Dayton Home

Family trailed her by car as deputies broadcast a detailed description.

At about 10:35 AM, Cattaraugus County deputies were directed to Pock Hill Road near the old Jane Addams home for a suicidal female walking on foot down the roadway after leaving a residence on Cottage Road in Dayton. Dispatch described her wearing gray sweatpants, a green long-sleeve shirt, and pink slides.

Her father was said to be trailing behind her in a white Subaru Outback and her mother in a black Jeep nearby. Dispatch noted no intoxication and no weapons, that she was not combative at the time, and that the father had video from an episode the night before. Deputies were still sorting the response when a separate missing-runaway report — an 18-year-old who left a Franklinville address to meet a man from a dating app — came over the same channel.

Just after 11:00 AM, BPD B-D units caught a robbery call at the Pet Supply Plus at 21st and Delaware, where dispatch said a woman in a blue hoodie and green yoga pants had made off with fish — with an employee brandishing a taser in the mix. The suspect was last seen walking toward the bus stop.

The getaway was, fittingly, unhurried. Roughly an hour later, over on the Parkside-and-Amherst side of the same chain, a female was taken into custody at the bus stop — the fish heist reeled in without a struggle.

A cross-country alarm that fizzled at the exit.

Just after 1:06 PM, Thruway dispatch put out a call on a black Jeep with unknown Texas plates reported all over the road heading east — an erratic-driver relay that had been phoned in from as far away as another state's police. Troopers were told a child was hanging from the vehicle's rear window near Exit 50.

By the time the Jeep was located westbound at the exit, the dramatic alarm resolved to nothing at all: no infractions found, no charges, and the child-in-the-window report unsubstantiated. The trooper moved on to sort out a tow for an unrelated motorcycle.

Editor’s Note

A steady midday flow of routine medical and alarm calls filled the wires across Western New York, but the window carried its share of tension: a man in an Amherst hotel room told dispatch he was being held against his will, a Kings Highway welfare check escalated into a standoff with a subject whose prior weapons-seizure history and body armor were read aloud to responding units, and Cattaraugus County crews made a grim discovery — an elderly man found dead beneath a lawnmower in a roadside ditch. Grand Island logged two marine incidents inside an hour, and Buffalo Fire turned out engines, a ladder, and a rescue for a car that rolled into a structure at Forest and Hawley. Between them ran the ordinary volume of a summer weekday, from chest-pain runs in the hill towns to a fish thief nabbed at a Buffalo bus stop.
