Snyder Crews Knock Down a Fire on Darwin Drive, Then Air the House Out

At 4:52 PM Amherst Fire Dispatch toned Snyder for a fire at 51 Darwin Drive, between Bethlehem Parkway and Kings Highway. Snyder 9-1-2 was on location within three minutes and 9-9-1 followed a beat later.

The good news came almost as fast: by 4:56 PM the interior team was reporting that “fire appears to be out, but we’ll need heavy ventilation” but positive-pressure ventilation would be needed to clear the building. Snyder 9-1-2 declared the fire out at 4:58 PM and the operator kept crews on scene for the vent.

Investigators Chase a Smoke Smell Through Clarence High

At 10:20 PM Amherst Fire Dispatch turned Clarence out to investigate smoke inside Clarence High School at 9625 Main Street, between Goodrich Road[*] [heard: Gunville] and Corey Lane. Dispatch went out twice — first with a page, then with the confirmation — and units were on the ground within minutes.

There was no fire, no glow, no working smell in the halls; the alarm system was reset and companies were released without event. A quiet resolution for a call on an otherwise empty summer-school-hours building.

Three Kids, a Handful of Rocks, and a Bus-Loop Escort at 3500 Main

At 10:22 PM Amherst PD sent a car to 3500 Main Street, meeting a complainant outside the China King in the old Boulevard Mall lot. She reported three younger males had been throwing rocks at her — none hit — and though she couldn’t describe them or say where they’d gone, she wanted an officer to walk her to the bus loop because she didn’t feel safe.

Somebody Out There Spent the Whole Night Getting a Stereo Beam and a Duplexer to Behave

The FRS/GMRS band is inherently short-range, so anything you hear on it is a neighbor talking to a neighbor — which is what makes it wonderful. From 7:48 PM until well past 9:24 PM, FRS Channel 16 hosted a rolling monologue from a WNY ham who was clearly getting to know a new piece of equipment.

It began with “I just got the stereo beam up today so I just wanted to test it out”, drifted through “I was falling apart there for a bit”, then wandered into “duplexer can only handle…” and, eventually, “I think my alignment is actually a lot better”. Nobody keyed a mic to argue with any of it.

A Ram, a Sedan, and Four Hours of Blinking Lights Behind the Georgetown Apartments

At 12:12 AM an Amherst PD car took a look-see call in the parking lot of the Georgetown Apartments at 331 Evans. The dispatcher had one clean detail: a black Ram pickup and a black sedan parked immediately behind it, “lights blinking”, and the two vehicles had been there for four hours. No further update, and no crime — just a small mystery for the graveyard shift.

It’s the second half of a routine welfare check at the extended-stay hotel on Innkeepers Lane that lands it here: a subject earlier flagged for an attempt-to-locate has called back and confirmed she’s home, “possibly intoxicated”, and the officer handling the follow-up closes the transmission with a farewell you don’t hear over public-safety radio very often: “you be good, please”. It is small and it is human and, on a night full of dirt-bike pursuits, it stood out.

Orange-and-White Dirt Bike and an Armed Rider Give Buffalo Districts the Runaround for Hours

Delaware to Kensington to Broadway, with State Police and Air 1 in the mix

It started just after 3:15 PM with a C-E caller asking BPD to send cars for “a male sitting on the porch with a gun” outside 129 Pulteney. Officers scrambled, but the rider took off before they arrived and only came back — dispatch said — on a black helmet and an orange-and-white dirt bike, heading east on East Amherst before cutting south on Delaware toward Kensington.

The call bounced around the city for the next three hours. Around 4:56 PM C-E was still reminding units they had “a black male, dressed in all-black, black helmet, on an orange-and-white dirt bike, flee from officers that is allegedly supposed to have a gun”; at 6:17 PM the bike surfaced again on Bailey, described this time with a Hispanic-male rider; by 6:19 PM Air 1 was in the air switching over to Channel 3 to chase it; and by 8:40 PM the pattern had grown to two four-wheelers and a dirt bike headed westbound Broadway near Bailey.

State Police unit 8134 was pulled in for a westbound-Broadway sighting. No one had eyes on the rider at any of the later checkpoints — the bike appeared, kept moving, and disappeared into the district again.

Hamburg Barricades Stay Up After a Flood Washes Twain-Howards Out

Just after 8:10 PM Hamburg PD Dispatch put a car on 28 Station reports that people were bypassing the town’s barricades and driving down into a section of Twain-Howards Road where flood water and debris still sat on the pavement. A supervisor asked whether Lake Shore could pull the barricades; the answer came back: “I’d definitely leave the barricades up until the flood can be passed and cleared out”.

The exchange got sharper as the evening wore on. Around 8:55 PM Hamburg asked whether Erie County Water was still on scene, then relayed a New York City-style crack from a state DOT crew: “the D’s are threatening to clean up the mess because it is Erie County Water’s problem”. By 9:19 PM the department was still trying to find someone at Erie County Water who could speak to it.
