Vacant House at 4695 Valley Collapses Into Itself After a Basement Full of Water — Twenty Grand to the Structure, Ten Grand to the Contents, and a Water Authority Lifer Stuck in Evans
An 11:19 a.m. door-open call grows into a second-floor-into-kitchen collapse by noon — the owner is dead, the mail is still arriving, and the only person who can pull the meter is, of course, on the other side of Erie County.
Amherst PD walked up on what started as a routine open-back-door call at 4695 Valley, between Center Road and Campbell, at 11:04 a.m. — a contractor location, owner said it should be locked.[1] Fifteen minutes later the officer on scene had a wholly different problem: the homeowner was deceased, the house was vacant, “there appears to be water coming out of the basement windows,” and the back door was wide open into the mess.[2]
By 11:30 the unit was working off the mail to identify next-of-kin — surname Doran — and reporting “large amount of water, it looks like, in the basement.”[3] By 11:55, an officer asked the question that decided the morning: “Enter any further until power’s off?” Answer, on the air: “Complete collapse. First floor. No entry possible.”[4] Amherst Fire dispatch confirmed the structural picture at 11:57 — “ceiling collapse from the second floor to the kitchen area” — and noted that the water authority emergency tech who could actually pull the service was working in Evans.[5] The damage estimate came across at 12:36: “$20,000 to the structure, $10,000 to the content. All the utilities have been shut off.”[6]

Mulch Fire in the Parking-Lot Island in Front of Kay Jewelers at 8130 Transit, East Amherst — RS-3 Rolling, “Bushes Smoking Right Next to the…”
A 1:11 p.m. Williamsville fire-line call describing “bushes smoking” near Sheridan and Hopkins ripens nine minutes later into a confirmed mulch fire in the Transit Road shopping plaza — same hot, breezy afternoon, two ignitions inside ten minutes.
At 1:11 p.m., Amherst Fire dispatched Williamsville on a possible mulch fire near the Amagon Funeral Home at Sheridan Drive and Hopkins Road — “bushes smoking right next to the…” the dispatcher trailed off as a second call came in.[7] At 1:20, the Transit Road event landed: East Amherst on a confirmed mulch fire at 8130 Transit Road, “in front of Kay Jewelers, between Maple Road and Renaissance Drive, in the island and the parking lot.”[8][9] RS-3 marked responding at 1:23.[10] At 2:00, the fire was extinguished — “fire with six damage to the one water can” — and Snyder went back in service.[11] Inside 80 minutes, two ignitions inside the same square mile on the first 76-degree afternoon of the season.

Transformer Blows Between Camel Boulevard and Hopkins, Drops the Signal at Millersport and North French — “There Is Now Fire Below It on the Ground”
A 1:49 p.m. transformer failure on Shell takes a stop light down a quarter mile away and starts a small ground fire under the pole.
Amherst Fire took the first call at 1:49 p.m.: a transformer that blew between Camel Boulevard and Hopkins Road, “and there is fire on the ground under the pool [sic].”[12] Getzville was dispatched to investigate.[13] Four minutes later, Amherst PD took a separate, unrelated-sounding 911: “We have a traffic signal out at Millersport and North French — caller says the lights are all out.” The dispatcher made the connection on the air: “We did have a transformer that blew on Shell, so it’s probably related to that.”[14][15] By 2:00 the crew was asking the homeowner whether the downed wires were live or on the ground — “It looks like it was just hurt.”[16] A traffic detail was posted to Millersport and French at 2:07.[17]

Broadside on Transit at Sheridan and 3rd, Two Cars, One Bleeding Child — “Transit Road Is Going to Be a Disaster with Construction”
A 10:48 a.m. two-vehicle wreck draws a Main-Transit page and a road-closure-via-construction headache; one child is reported bleeding from the nose.
Amherst Fire dispatched Main-Transit at 10:48 a.m. on a two-vehicle broadside at Transit Road and 3rd, “one child, the man from the north,” one minute later reported as “one child bleeding from his nose.”[18][19] Twin City 244 was advised on the air to come in via Brompton-Sheridan-3rd — the dispatcher’s rationale, blunt: “Transit Road is going to be a disaster with construction.”[20] By 11:19, 242 was transporting one to Sisters of Charity Hospital with one refusal and one adult sign-off.[21]

Black Mustang on the Boulevard Near Delta Sonic Nearly Hits a Kid on a Dirt Bike, Then Cuts Down Brennan — Plate Comes Back to Green Gauge
12:45 p.m. caller said the car was northbound, then turned down Brennan; Amherst PD got the plate before the caller lost sight: Frank Paul Nancy 292828.
Amherst PD took the call at 12:45 p.m.: a black Mustang “almost struck a kid riding his dirt bike down the boulevard,” near Delta Sonic and East Robinson, then cut down Brennan northbound.[22] Plate was Frank-Paul-Nancy 292828, registered to an address on Green Gauge; the caller had lost sight by the time officers were rolling.[22]

HMS Security Spends Half the Morning Trying to Tell “Moose” That the Vehicle He Couldn’t Stop at the Gate Was the Mailman
Three radio handles in one shift — Bruce Knuckle Cable, Moose, Wes — and a private-security comedy of postal manners that runs from 8:44 to nearly 9:11.
The morning opened on the Sports Venues simulcast with one officer keying up: “Bruce Knuckle Cable, come in.”[23] Reply: “Speak to me, Moose.”[24] The bit of business that earned the day’s sidebar arrived at 8:44, when a vehicle slipped through Moose’s gate the moment he opened it. “He kind of just drove past me in the gate when I opened it. I couldn’t tell him to turn around.”[25] The dispatcher, sensibly: “What kind of vehicle is it?” Moose, calmly: “Because I’m out with the mailman right now. — That’s who I’m talking about.”[26] Long pause on dispatch’s side, then: “The mailman?”[27] Eventually a tactical concession from the booth: “Yeah, it’s a good time to turn around because Rick wasn’t here, but if you’ll take the package, that’s fine.”[28] A separate, undated philosophical observation a few hours later, from the same channel: “Look at that, sun does shine on the dog’s ass.”[29]

TPS BNIA Shuttle Dispatcher Files the Single Most Demoralizing Staffing Update of the Day
A 9:14 a.m. one-woman roll call from the shuttle booth at Buffalo Niagara: the iCall list, in full.
“I just saw a message. I don’t know if the iCall drivers are going to respond because I checked with them first. Jody’s already working. Fox works his other job, Pat’s on the towel, Mike Means is golfing, and Dan Buzak won’t return my call.”[30] Spoken aloud, on the radio, by someone who needed at least one of those names to come through. None of them did. A few hours later, also from the shuttle booth: “Can you watch the booth for a minute so I can run to the bathroom?”[31] The day, in two acts.
Front Desk Drama
Embassy Suites Niagara: Room 1815 Is Way Too Hot, the Housekeeper Says Something Is Wrong with the Curtain Rod in 1405, and the Guest at Windham Garden Is Trying to Flag the Shuttle Driver Down in a Gray Hoodie
A normal mid-day on the Embassy Control channel, which is, depending on who is keying up, hotel ops, valet, or hotel security.
At 8:42 a.m., a guest in 1815 called down: room is way too hot, “someone was up there yesterday, but it’s not…”[32] At 10:54, the front desk relayed the housekeeper’s complaint: “1405, can you go see the housekeeper? She says there’s something wrong with the curtain rod.”[33] Then at 2:41 the channel turned briefly into a sidewalk drama: “You have a guest on deck at Windham Garden. He’s wearing a gray hoodie with the hoodie up.” Reply: “That’s Ramada, I believe.” And then the rejoinder that closes the scene: “He just tried to flag me down. That’s all I know.”[34] Sometimes the right hotel is the one paying you. Sometimes it’s the one next door.

Rabid Raccoon Chasing People at the Bike-Path Entrance — 11:33 a.m., Single-Sentence Amherst PD Transmission
The dispatcher who took the call did not get a follow-up, did not get a unit number, and did not, on the air, get the location of the entrance.
Verbatim: “Profoundly at the entrance to the bike path, there’s a rabid raccoon chasing people around.”[35] The next transmission on the channel was “Bye-bye.”[36] Treat with respect.
Heard On Air
“Spider-Man 2 Is Gone.” Amherst Fire Dispatch, 11:02 a.m., Mid-Page, No Further Explanation Offered
Buried between two responding-units transmissions on the eastbound 290-to-I-90 ramp for a two-car MVA.
Three words, dropped between fire-channel chatter on a working two-vehicle MVA on the 290-to-90 east ramp.[37] Spider-Man, presumably, was a unit. Spider-Man 2, presumably, was the bench. Either way, the bench was gone.
Confession Booth
Amherst PD, Open Mic at 11:32: “Love You, Everybody”
Three syllables. No call sign. No follow-up. No correction.
The transmission is in the clear, attributed in the export only to “Amherst PD,” with no unit on the front of it.[38] Could have been an officer signing off a shift. Could have been a hot mic on a phone call. We are not in a position to know. The radio loved them back.
Heard On Air
West Seneca School Bus Channel, 8:36 a.m., on Where to Eat in Whatever Town They Are In: “I’d Be Happy with Just a Tim Horton’s”
A driver on a road trip, voice slightly resigned, declares the lowest possible bar.
“Um, I don’t really know anything that’s around here. Specifically, I’d be happy with just a Tim Horton’s.”[39] Spoken from somewhere on a Saturday route. The honesty in this transmission is the news.
Single Word
Embassy Control, 1:52 p.m.: “Bork.”
A complete radio transmission. One syllable. Carrier off.
Bork.[40]
Open Mic
Erie County Parking Enforcement, 1:23 p.m.: “Shit, Boy.”
Followed nine seconds later, on the same channel, by the word “Masses.”
Two consecutive Parking Enforcement transmissions, on the same key-up cycle, that together comprise the entirety of the day’s Parking Enforcement editorial output.[41][42] No vehicle. No plate. No location.
Diagnosis
Wyoming County Sheriff, 10:05 a.m.: “It’s Pretty Worse Than I Thought.”
Six words, no context, no follow-up audible on the channel for another forty-five minutes.
Direct quote, single transmission.[43] No further detail was offered. There rarely is.
Vehicle Report
TPS BNIA Shuttle, 8:58 a.m., Unprompted, on His Father’s Bike: “My Dad Had a Motorcycle Up in Hell About a Year or Two Ago”
Conversation between two shuttle drivers, mid-route, dropped onto the channel as if it were a status update.
“My dad had a motorcycle up in hell about a year or two ago. He would still ride it, but now he doesn’t go as much.”[44] Whatever “up in hell” refers to in the elder driver’s personal geography — the location, the experience, the riding conditions — we did not learn on the air.
Sign-Off
Niagara County Fire Control Closes a Twelve-Second Exchange with, in Sequence, “Cheers,” “They’re Not Available,” “Good Night”
12:13 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, dispatcher mood unknown.
Three consecutive single-line transmissions, in that order, no clarifying context audible on either side.[45] The fire dispatcher in question may have been at the end of a shift; the shift, on the other hand, was halfway through.
